Electric Island Waiheke seminar covers sustainability

Electric Island Waiheke will host a series of seminars throughout 2021 at the Waiheke High School in support of Electric Island’s vision for Waiheke to be an island free of pollution, noise, emissions, and costs of petrol, non plug-in hybrid and diesel engines by 2030.

The first in the Energy Resilience Seminar Series 2021 covering community energy ownership options, EV charging etiquette, and student sustainability is on Wednesday May 12 in the Waiheke Island High School Auditorium, 6pm-7.15pm.

Any community members with an interest in an all-electric future on Waiheke are welcome, with entry a koha.

Electric Island Waiheke was officially launched on November 30, 2018, with the goal of making Waiheke fossil fuel free by 2030.

Norwegian Electric Vehicle Owners Association secretary general Christina Bu attended the launch and challenged Waiheke to follow in Norway’s footsteps in the switch to EVs.

About 40 EVs were on the Island then with more than 350 EVs now (mostly Nissan Leafs), including Auckland’s first electric buses and first electric rubbish collection truck.

Electric Island Waiheke also has a vision for energy self-sufficiency using solar and wind generation to reduce reliance on its power cable to the mainland.
