EV rebates boost July new vehicle registrations
The Tesla Model 3 topped new electric car registrations in July at 197, adding up to 760 pure EV registrations for the month.
The surge in EV sales prompted by the July introduction of the Clean Car Discount rebate scheme for low and zero emission vehicles has hoisted July’s vehicle registrations to 15,053 units – a record for the month and indeed providing a record for the first seven months of this year, Motor Industry Association (MIA) chief executive David Crawford says.
That’s 2790 more units (up 22.8%) than for July 2020 when 12,263 units were recorded, boosting the market 51.2% (33,790 units) to date compared with the first seven months of last year.
Crawford says while the EV rebate saw a lift in sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs reached 431 in July), hybrid sales also remained strong at 1163 sold during the month.
He points out that 2377 passenger BEVs have been registered year-to-date, compared with only 701 BEVs registered for the same period last year.
MIA tables show the top three new electrics sold during July were the Tesla Model 3 on 197, followed by the MG ZS EV with 188 and the Hyundai Kona on 151.
Mitsubishi led the PHEV category with its Eclipse Cross recording 156 registrations, followed by the Outlander on 99 then the MG HS with 63.
In spite of the EV surge, the Ford Ranger was the top model in July registrations with 1418 units, then the Toyota Hilux on 809 units and the Mitsubishi ASX on 737 units.
MIA says registration of 9984 passenger and SUVs for July 2021 were up 21.8% (1784 units) on the same month last year while commercial vehicle registrations of 5069 were up 24.8% (1006 units) compared to July 2020.
“This is a record month of July for commercial vehicles.”
Toyota remains the overall market leader with 16% market share (2434 units), followed by Mitsubishi on 13% (1960 units) and Ford with 11% market share (1728 units).

Might I suggest that any EV rebate also be made available to those who would like to convert their existing (ICE) vehicles to electric? That could significantly increase the EV takeup, and reduction of FF consumption, and CO2 emissions. It would also create significant onshore industry, in conversions.
Disclaimer – I may (in the future) be a beneficiary of increased EV conversion business.
It will be interesting to watch 2022 Jan, Feb and Mar to see how these stats will change in favour of BEV
Geoff,
How is it in the interest of the EV movement (& poss, (but V unlikeyl, saving the planet) for my attached comment (below) to be deleted?
Had a gutful. Pissed, even.
