Meridian launching nationwide EV charging network

Meridian Energy will launch a nationwide EV charging network of more than 200 chargers over three years.

“We know that the electrification of transport is one of the biggest ways that we can help combat climate change,” Meridian chief executive Neal Barclay says.

“But New Zealand needs more extensive charging infrastructure to help build real momentum to the switch to electric.”

Barclay says the multi-million-dollar investment will provide AC chargers suited to malls, retail and business parks and community facilities.

He says the AC chargers have less impact on the electricity networks and will complement the existing DC fast chargers available for those who need to charge quickly and travel long distances.

“As a 100% renewable energy generator, we’re committed to helping Aotearoa achieve its climate change commitments and this is one way that we’re able to make a meaningful impact,” he adds.

Barclay says the network will help remove any stress by reducing range anxiety and leave EV drivers confident in their decision to go electric while supporting the Government’s ambitious plans to combat climate change.

“It is clear from the recent Government announcement and the Climate Change Commission’s draft recommendations that electrification of transport will play a large role in the future decarbonisation of the New Zealand economy,” Barclay says. 

“And we’re committed to working with government, local councils, like minded businesses and our customers to support this transition.”

EV drivers benefit from having more options and Meridian’s AC chargers will suit cars parked for hours at a time, and plug-in hybrids that cannot DC charge, ChargeNet NZ chief executive and co-founder Steve West says.

“Access to slow, fast, and high-power charging will help increase EV adoption, reduce range anxiety and ultimately help New Zealand move towards the 2050 target of a net-zero, low-emissions Aotearoa.”
