Nissan Leaf batteries to be recycled by former Tesla executive’s firm

Former Tesla executive JB Straubel’s battery recycling start-up Redwood Materials in Nevada will recycle Nissan Leaf batteries under a deal with US-based Envision AESC.

Redwood intends recycling old, defective, or damaged battery cells and scrap materials to minimise the global impact mining has on the environment and waste storage.

Straubel left Tesla in 2019, two years after starting Redwood Materials, Teslarati reports.

Recycling materials from EV batteries will help the EV industry keep moving, industry experts saying the world doesn’t produce enough materials used in EV batteries, especially at the rate they are being mined – which increases the need for new battery materials or recycling projects.

Last year, Redwood Materials revealed it is testing its recycling process with scrap from Panasonic’s operations at Gigafactory Nevada.

Redwood also received backing from Amazon and plans to recycle batteries from laptops, phones, and other electronic devices.
