Urban mobility key at IAA Mobility 2021

The latest innovations in sustainable future transport are expected to be revealed at the AAA Mobility motor show in BMW Group’s home city of Munich from September 7-12.

Among them are likely to be the Mercedes-Benz EQG electric concept which reports indicate may be introduced in late 2022 with about 500km range, expected to be unveiled at the show’s Summit set aside for such purposes.

The main topics at the show will be the circular economy, sustainability and urban mobility.

Visitors who can’t be there can live-stream the IAA or catch up with events using recorded coverage.

With its Open Space stage for new mobility concepts, the IAA will create an easily accessible format for visitors and take personal mobility of the future to the heart of the city with the latest vehicles in city squares such as Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz or Max-Joseph-Platz.

The BMW Group says it will be the largest exhibitor at the IAA, welcoming visitors to the exhibition halls, to BMW’s “four-cylinder building” headquarters, BMW Welt and the BMW Museum, and to the BMW Hubs.

“The IAA is exploring the challenges of mobility in the future and offers an important forum for the ideas and concepts that carmakers are coming up with,” BMW brand and customer senior vice president Jens Thiemer says.

“We are inviting show attendees to take part in an open discussion – in person at the BMW Hubs in Munich and digitally around the world.”

The BMW Group has the twin goals of cutting CO2 emissions from production by 80% up to 2030 and bringing a total of about 10 million fully electric vehicles onto the roads over the next 10 years or so.

In addition, it aims to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle over the course of their lifecycle by at least a third.

Interactive robots moving along a runway (the Sustainability Catwalk) and avatars in various video clips will help provide information to IAA Mobility visitors.

“The aim of BMW is to reconcile economic interests with the natural ecosystem,” says Thiemer.

“We will achieve this through a new way of thinking, through reuse and by using fewer and more recyclable materials,” he adds.

“A circular economy will help BMW to achieve an even greater degree of sustainability in the future.”

BMW will showcase its i4 and iX at the BMW Hub, both due on the market in November this year, while BMW’s hydrogen fuel-cell drive system in the second generation Next will feature as a shuttle in the Blue Lane connecting the show locations.

BMW Motorrad will have three pioneering models on display at the IAA – the BMW CE 04 electric scooter and two electric mobility concepts, while the Mini Urbanaut will be shown too.

A selection of innovative start-ups also feature in the BMW Startup Garage.

A highlight of IAA Mobility is the live pitch event on September 9, a one-hour show with innovative companies presenting their standout sustainable technologies.
