VW ID.4 GTX presented globally

The sporty all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 GTX has been shown at a digital world premiere at Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport.

Based on VW’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB), it is the first VW model to feature dual-motor all-wheel drive and is destined for Europe within a few months, with New Zealand and Australia unlikely to see it until at least 2023.

VW wants to increase the sale of purely electric vehicles in Europe to 70% by 2030.

“Electric driving is simply great fun – and with the ID.4 GTX we are adding a new dimension of sportiness and dynamics,” Volkswagen Brand chief executive Ralf Brandstätter says.

It has a 77kWh battery pack, providing up to 480km range.

The ID.4 GTX’s front and rear axle motors deliver a combined maximum electrical output of 220kW, can accelerate to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds and has a 180km/h limited top speed.

An augmented reality head-up display and comprehensive assist systems support the driver.

Eye-catching elements at the rear include the 3D LED tail-light cluster with brake lights that form an X.

Volkswagen intends to become climate-neutral by 2050.

By 2025, Volkswagen will have invested around 16 billion euros in electric mobility, hybridisation and digitalisation.

The ID.4 GTX will start in Germany at an entry-level price of 50,415 euros (about NZ$84,340), with customers being able to apply for a (net) grant of 7500 euros.
