Video: Hyundai teases Ioniq 5

Hyundai has given some indications about its electric Ioniq 5 midsize SUV which premieres globally in February.

The brand’s dedicated Ioniq EV line-up starts with the Ioniq 5 which provides enhanced customer experiences through advanced mobility solutions, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology providing a general power supply for uses such as camping.

It also includes ultra-fast charging – able to provide 100km range within five minutes.

The Ioniq 5 presents a change in EV design and features ‘Parametric Pixels’ (the smallest digital imaging unit) and eco-friendly elements such as colour material finish (CMF) that connects the analogue with digital emotions, showcasing the Ioniq brand’s timeless design value, Hyundai says.

It will be the first vehicle mated with Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), an innovative system made exclusively for next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to launch a new era of clean mobility for the company.

The Ioniq 5’s front end has arrays of pixel-inspired lights suggestive of the digital technology within. It’s also the first Hyundai vehicle to feature a clamshell hood spanning the car’s entire width – minimising panel gaps and creating a clean and high-tech overall look.

Aero-optimised wheels echo the Parametric Pixel design theme, offered in a super-sized 20-inch diameter, the largest rims ever fitted to a Hyundai EV.

“Ioniq 5 presents an all-new customer experience through innovative EV design that is evocative of the icon that established Hyundai’s design DNA,” Hyundai Global Design Centre head and senior vice president SangYup Lee says.

“Beginning with Ioniq 5, our dedicated EV line-up brand will redefine the relationship between people and their cars, establishing a new standard against which all BEV design experiences will be measured.”

Hyundai Motor has released four teaser videos to spark curiosity about the new model, each presenting viewers with a peek at the Ioniq 5’s core technologies.

Three ‘Ultimate Camping’ videos show a camper using various electrical appliances powered by the Ioniq’s 3.5kW V2L technology (110/220V power supply) to roast a turkey in a large oven, listen to music on high-end audio speakers, and exercise on a treadmill.

A ‘5 Min Challenge’ video highlights the EV’s ultra-fast charging capability that enables it to drive more than 100km with only a five-minute charge (WLTP Standard).

A smartphone, laptop and action camera were each charged for five minutes and competed to be the last to survive.

Hyundai will release more about the Ioniq 5 in the lead-up to the February world premiere.
